I’ve always been anti-GPS, because I think people should have a sense of direction. I bought this GPS because I was going on a 16 day trip (Hawaii and San Francisco) and didn’t want to be lost in the middle of a strange place.
On my trip to Hawaii’s Big Island (…day 3 into my vacation) it stopped working, wouldn’t turn on, or charge. Somehow I managed to make it back to the vacation house when I got back to O’ahu… (somehow, because my sense of direction was off from using this thing). I relied on my internal compass and Google Maps the rest of the trip, and sent this thing back when I arrived home.
I always hate reading Amazon reviews where someone is telling their story of device failure; however, mine stopped working less than a week after getting it when I was no where near home. (I bought it July 13th, left for vacation July 18th, it died July 21st, and I returned it August 3rd.)
Maybe I’m that 1% whose device just didn’t work. Either way I’ve returned to being anti-GPS. Technology is wonderful, but so is your internal compass. I hope our society doesn’t become so techie that we lose all common sense.

You can not beat this GPS. We use ours all the time and are extremely happy with it. I love the features-you can save destinations to your “favorites” and can search local shopping areas or restaurants. I also like how if you go off course it will say “recalculating” and will point you in the new direction. My Mom’s more expensive GPS will not do this.
I highly, highly recommend this product. For the price, you simply cannot beat it!

It is a good product, but just a little expensive.
And there is a small place that is not so convenient, when I chose a destination to go and I move the map to see how it goes. It just choose another destination for me and direct me to the new address. Hope Garmin could improve their design and not let their custom change their destination so easily and unconsciously.

The nuvi 255W works fine. Functionally the only slight problem is that on my unit I have to press pretty hard on the screen if I want to ‘drag’ the map. I don’t know if that’s typical or just my unit, I still rate it 5 stars.
But the most important note I have to share with people has to do with purchasing extra maps for the unit.
Since we will be travelling in the UK, I purchased the UK map for $100. You have your choice to download the map, or have it shipped on an SD card. Not thinking there was any difference I figured I’d get it quicker and save a few bucks by downloading the map. It then occurred to me that in the future I might want to upgrade the unit, and would want to keep using the extra maps I’d purchased on a different nuvi. I emailed tech support and asked if it would be possible to ‘de-activate’ the map on my current unit and then ‘activate’ it to work with a different unit. Here is the reply I got from tech support and I have to say I’m not happy, as it turns out there is a huge difference between the purchased SD card and the downloaded data. This should be explained on the website, and as far as I can see this is not documented anywhere on Garmin’s site. If it is, it sure isn’t obvious.
Here’s the email:
Dear xxx,
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. It depends on the format that you get those maps in. If you get them on a DVD or direct download, they will be locked to the device and there would not be a way to transfer them over to the new unit. However, if you got the maps on a preloaded SD card, you can put that card in any unit you want and the maps will work, since the unlock code is embedded in the card itself and is not dedicated to any specific unit.
With Best Regards,
Robert O
So my advice to anyone purchasing extra maps is to make sure you get the SD card if you want to use the data with a different unit!
